Johnny Kulo has released an exceptional track in the form of ‘Loyal’. It’s a laid-back piece of alt-pop that places his melodic voice at centre stage. Crisp guitar work permeates the texture, with smooth bass lines, warm synths and crunchy drums making up the rest of the track’s lo-fi R&B timbre. “The whole song was written as I was recording it, and initially I intended to just record the first idea so I can go away to write something ‘substantial’,” he explains. “But then I decided, fuck it, this is what I’m going thru right now and it’s expressed exactly in that way. Not every verse needs to be premeditated, sometimes it sounds less clever the more it’s polished you know?” The track is taken from his upcoming EP, Bloom. -Dan Peeke.
